Nehemiah's Grief for the Exiles
1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now it came to pass in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the castle, E DBRI NChMIA BN ChKLIA UIAI BChDSh KSLU ShNTh OShRIM UENI AIIThI BShUShN ABIRA א דברי נחמיה בן חכליה ויהי בחדש כסלו שנת עשרים ואני הייתי בשושן הבירה
2 that Hanani, one of my brethren, came out of Judah, he and certain men; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, that were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. 3 They said unto me: 'The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach; the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.' 4 It came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven, D UIAI KShMOI ETh ADBRIM AELA IShBThI UEBKA UEThEBLA IMIM UEAI TsM UMThFLL LFNI ELAI AShMIM ד ויהי כשמעי את הדברים האלה ישבתי ואבכה ואתאבלה ימים ואהי צם ומתפלל לפני אלהי השמים
5 and said: 'I beseech You, O IAUA, the God of heaven, the great and awful God, that keeps covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments; A UEMR ENE IAUA ELAI AShMIM AEL AGDUL UANURE ShMR ABRITh UChSD LEABIU ULShMRI MTsUThIU ה ואמר אנא יהוה אלהי השמים האל הגדול והנורא שמר הברית וחסד לאהביו ולשמרי מצותיו
6 let Your ear now be attentive, and Your eyes open, that You may hearken unto the prayer of Your servant, which I pray before You at this time, day and night, for the children of Israel Your servants, while I confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against You; yes, I and my father's house have sinned. U ThAI NE EZNK QShBTh UOINIK FThUChUTh LShMO EL ThFLTh OBDK EShR ENKI MThFLL LFNIK AIUM IUMM ULILA OL BNI IShREL OBDIK UMThUDA OL ChTEUTh BNI IShREL EShR ChTENU LK UENI UBITh EBI ChTENU ו תהי נא אזנך קשבת ועיניך פתוחות לשמע אל תפלת עבדך אשר אנכי מתפלל לפניך היום יומם ולילה על בני ישראל עבדיך ומתודה על חטאות בני ישראל אשר חטאנו לך ואני ובית אבי חטאנו
7 We have dealt very corruptly against You, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances which You didst command Your servant Moses. 8 Remember, I beseech You, the word that You didst command Your servant Moses, saying: If you deal treacherously, I will scatter you abroad among the peoples; Ch ZKR NE ETh ADBR EShR TsUITh ETh MShA OBDK LEMR EThM ThMOLU ENI EFITs EThKM BOMIM ח זכר נא את הדבר אשר צוית את משה עבדך לאמר אתם תמעלו אני אפיץ אתכם בעמים
9 but if you return unto Me, and keep My commandments and do them, though your dispersed were in the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to cause My name to dwell there. T UShBThM ELI UShMRThM MTsUThI UOShIThM EThM EM IAIA NDChKM BQTsA AShMIM MShM EQBTsM UABUEThIM (UABIEThIM) EL AMQUM EShR BChRThI LShKN ETh ShMI ShM ט ושבתם אלי ושמרתם מצותי ועשיתם אתם אם יהיה נדחכם בקצה השמים משם אקבצם והבואתים (והביאתים) אל המקום אשר בחרתי לשכן את שמי שם
10 Now these are Your servants and Your people, whom You have redeemed by Your great power, and by Your strong hand. I UAM OBDIK UOMK EShR FDITh BKChK AGDUL UBIDK AChZQA י והם עבדיך ועמך אשר פדית בכחך הגדול ובידך החזקה
11 O Lord, I beseech You, let now Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants, who delight to fear Your name; and prosper, I pray You, Your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.'
