Mourning Lost Tribe

2 The people came to Beth-el, and sat there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore. B UIBE AOM BITh EL UIShBU ShM OD AORB LFNI AELAIM UIShEU QULM UIBKU BKI GDUL ב ויבא העם בית אל וישבו שם עד הערב לפני האלהים וישאו קולם ויבכו בכי גדול
3 They said: 'O IAUA, the God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to-day one tribe lacking in Israel?' G UIEMRU LMA IAUA ELAI IShREL AIThA ZETh BIShREL LAFQD AIUM MIShREL ShBT EChD ג ויאמרו למה יהוה אלהי ישראל היתה זאת בישראל להפקד היום מישראל שבט אחד
4 It came to pass on the morrow that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. {P} D UIAI MMChRTh UIShKIMU AOM UIBNU ShM MZBCh UIOLU OLUTh UShLMIM {F} ד ויהי ממחרת וישכימו העם ויבנו שם מזבח ויעלו עלות ושלמים {פ}
5 The children of Israel said: 'Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up in the assembly unto IAUA?' For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up unto IAUA to Mizpah, saying: 'He shall surely be put to death.' 6 The children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said: 'There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day. U UINChMU BNI IShREL EL BNIMN EChIU UIEMRU NGDO AIUM ShBT EChD MIShREL ו וינחמו בני ישראל אל בנימן אחיו ויאמרו נגדע היום שבט אחד מישראל
7 How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by IAUA that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?' Z MA NOShA LAM LNUThRIM LNShIM UENChNU NShBONU BIAUA LBLThI ThTh LAM MBNUThINU LNShIM ז מה נעשה להם לנותרים לנשים ואנחנו נשבענו ביהוה לבלתי תת להם מבנותינו לנשים
8 They said: 'What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto IAUA to Mizpah?' And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly. 9 For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there. T UIThFQD AOM UANA EIN ShM EISh MIUShBI IBSh GLOD ט ויתפקד העם והנה אין שם איש מיושבי יבש גלעד
10 The congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the most brave, and commanded them, saying: 'Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones. 11 This is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that has lain by man.' IE UZA ADBR EShR ThOShU KL ZKR UKL EShA IDOTh MShKB ZKR ThChRIMU יא וזה הדבר אשר תעשו כל זכר וכל אשה ידעת משכב זכר תחרימו
12 They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. {P} IB UIMTsEU MIUShBI IBISh GLOD ERBO MEUTh NORA BThULA EShR LE IDOA EISh LMShKB ZKR UIBEU EUThM EL AMChNA ShLA EShR BERTs KNON {F} יב וימצאו מיושבי יביש גלעד ארבע מאות נערה בתולה אשר לא ידעה איש למשכב זכר ויבאו אותם אל המחנה שלה אשר בארץ כנען {פ}
13 The whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace unto them. IG UIShLChU KL AODA UIDBRU EL BNI BNIMN EShR BSLO RMUN UIQREU LAM ShLUM יג וישלחו כל העדה וידברו אל בני בנימן אשר בסלע רמון ויקראו להם שלום
14 Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead; and yet so they sufficed them not. 15 The people repented them for Benjamin, because that IAUA had made a breach in the tribes of Israel. TU UAOM NChM LBNIMN KI OShA IAUA FRTs BShBTI IShREL טו והעם נחם לבנימן כי עשה יהוה פרץ בשבטי ישראל
16 Then the elders of the congregation said: 'How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?' TZ UIEMRU ZQNI AODA MA NOShA LNUThRIM LNShIM KI NShMDA MBNIMN EShA טז ויאמרו זקני העדה מה נעשה לנותרים לנשים כי נשמדה מבנימן אשה
17 They said: 'They that are escaped must be as an inheritance for Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel. IZ UIEMRU IRShTh FLITA LBNIMN ULE IMChA ShBT MIShREL יז ויאמרו ירשת פליטה לבנימן ולא ימחה שבט מישראל
18 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters.' For the children of Israel had sworn, saying: 'Cursed be he that gives a wife to Benjamin.' {S} ICh UENChNU LE NUKL LThTh LAM NShIM MBNUThINU KI NShBOU BNI IShREL LEMR ERUR NThN EShA LBNIMN {S} יח ואנחנו לא נוכל לתת להם נשים מבנותינו כי נשבעו בני ישראל לאמר ארור נתן אשה לבנימן {ס}
19 They said: 'Behold, there is the feast of IAUA from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.' 20 They commanded the children of Benjamin, saying: 'Go and lie in wait in the vineyards; K UITsU (UITsUU) ETh BNI BNIMN LEMR LKU UERBThM BKRMIM כ ויצו (ויצוו) את בני בנימן לאמר לכו וארבתם בכרמים
21 and see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come you out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 23 The children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they carried off; and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them.
