Nathan Rebukes David
1 IAUA sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him: 'There were two men in one city: the one rich, and the other poor. 2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds; B LOShIR AIA TsEN UBQR ARBA MED ב לעשיר היה צאן ובקר הרבה מאד
3 but the poor man had nothing save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and reared; and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own morsel, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was to him as a daughter. 4 There came a traveller to the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come to him, but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.' 5 David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan: 'As IAUA lives, the man that has done this deserves to die; A UIChR-EF DUD BEISh MED UIEMR EL-NThN ChI-IAUA KI BN-MUTh AEISh AOShA ZETh ה ויחר-אף דוד באיש מאד ויאמר אל-נתן חי-יהוה כי בן-מות האיש העשה זאת
6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.' U UETh-AKBShA IShLM ERBOThIM OQB EShR OShA ETh-ADBR AZA UOL EShR LE-ChML ו ואת-הכבשה ישלם ארבעתים עקב אשר עשה את-הדבר הזה ועל אשר לא-חמל
7 Nathan said to David: 'You are the man. Thus says IAUA, the God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul; Z UIEMR NThN EL-DUD EThA AEISh KA-EMR IAUA ELAI IShREL ENKI MShChThIK LMLK OL-IShREL UENKI ATsLThIK MID ShEUL ז ויאמר נתן אל-דוד אתה האיש כה-אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל אנכי משחתיך למלך על-ישראל ואנכי הצלתיך מיד שאול
8 and I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that were too little, then would I add to you so much more. 9 Wherefore have you despised the word of IAUA, to do that which is evil in My sight? Uriah the Hittite you have smitten with the sword, and his wife you have taken to be your wife, and him you have slain with the sword of the children of Ammon. 10 Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house; because you have despised Me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. 11 Thus says IAUA: Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house, and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For you didst it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.' IB KI EThA OShITh BSThR UENI EOShA ETh-ADBR AZA NGD KL-IShREL UNGD AShMSh יב כי אתה עשית בסתר ואני אעשה את-הדבר הזה נגד כל-ישראל ונגד השמש
13 David said to Nathan: 'I have sinned against IAUA.' Nathan said to David: 'IAUA also has put away your sin; you shall not die. IG UIEMR DUD EL-NThN ChTEThI LIAUA UIEMR NThN EL-DUD GM-IAUA AOBIR ChTEThK LE ThMUTh יג ויאמר דוד אל-נתן חטאתי ליהוה ויאמר נתן אל-דוד גם-יהוה העביר חטאתך לא תמות
14 Howbeit, because by this deed you have greatly blasphemed the enemies of IAUA, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.' ID EFS KI-NETs NETsTh ETh-EIBI IAUA BDBR AZA GM ABN AILUD LK MUTh IMUTh יד אפס כי-נאץ נאצת את-איבי יהוה בדבר הזה גם הבן הילוד לך מות ימות
15 Nathan departed to his house. IAUA struck the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it was very sick. TU UILK NThN EL-BIThU UIGF IAUA ETh-AILD EShR ILDA EShTh-EURIA LDUD UIENSh טו וילך נתן אל-ביתו ויגף יהוה את-הילד אשר ילדה אשת-אוריה לדוד ויאנש
16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and as often as he went in, he lay all night on the earth. TZ UIBQSh DUD ETh-AELAIM BOD ANOR UITsM DUD TsUM UBE ULN UShKB ERTsA טז ויבקש דוד את-האלהים בעד הנער ויצם דוד צום ובא ולן ושכב ארצה
17 The elders of his house arose, and stood beside him, to raise him up from the earth; but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them. IZ UIQMU ZQNI BIThU OLIU LAQIMU MN-AERTs ULE EBA ULE-BRE EThM LChM יז ויקמו זקני ביתו עליו להקימו מן-הארץ ולא אבה ולא-ברא אתם לחם
18 It came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. The servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said: 'Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he hearkened not to our voice; how then shall we tell him that the child is dead, so that he do himself some harm?' 19 But when David saw that his servants whispered together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants: 'Is the child dead?' They said: 'He is dead.' 20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel; and he came into the house of IAUA, and worshipped; then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat. 21 Then said his servants to him: 'What thing is this that you have done? you didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, you didst rise and eat bread.' 22 He said: 'While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I said: Who knows whether IAUA will not be gracious to me, that the child may live? 24 David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her; and she bore a son, and called his name Solomon. 25 and He sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his name Jedidiah, for IAUA's sake. KA UIShLCh BID NThN ANBIE UIQRE ETh-ShMU IDIDIA BOBUR IAUA כה וישלח ביד נתן הנביא ויקרא את-שמו ידידיה בעבור יהוה
26 Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city. KU UILChM IUEB BRBTh BNI OMUN UILKD ETh-OIR AMLUKA כו וילחם יואב ברבת בני עמון וילכד את-עיר המלוכה
27 Joab sent messengers to David, and said: 'I have fought against Rabbah, yes, I have taken the city of waters. KZ UIShLCh IUEB MLEKIM EL-DUD UIEMR NLChMThI BRBA GM-LKDThI ETh-OIR AMIM כז וישלח יואב מלאכים אל-דוד ויאמר נלחמתי ברבה גם-לכדתי את-עיר המים
28 Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; unless I take the city, and it be called after my name.' KCh UOThA ESF ETh-IThR AOM UChNA OL-AOIR ULKDA FN-ELKD ENI ETh-AOIR UNQRE ShMI OLIA כח ועתה אסף את-יתר העם וחנה על-העיר ולכדה פן-אלכד אני את-העיר ונקרא שמי עליה
29 David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it. KT UIESF DUD ETh-KL-AOM UILK RBThA UILChM BA UILKDA כט ויאסף דוד את-כל-העם וילך רבתה וילחם בה וילכדה
30 He took the crown of Malcam from off his head; and the weight thereof was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David's head. He brought forth the spoil of the city, exceeding much. 31 He brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln; and thus did he to all the cities of the children of Ammon. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
