David Learns of Saul's Death
1 It came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag; E UIAI EChRI MUTh ShEUL UDUD ShB MAKUTh ETh AOMLQ UIShB DUD BTsQLG IMIM ShNIM א ויהי אחרי מות שאול ודוד שב מהכות את העמלק וישב דוד בצקלג ימים שנים
2 it came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head; and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and prostrated himself. 4 David said unto him: 'How went the matter? I pray you, tell me.' He answered: 'The people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.' 5 David said unto the young man that told him: 'How know you that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?' A UIEMR DUD EL ANOR AMGID LU EIK IDOTh KI MTh ShEUL UIAUNThN BNU ה ויאמר דוד אל הנער המגיד לו איך ידעת כי מת שאול ויהונתן בנו
6 The young man that told him said: 'As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and the horsemen pressed hard upon him. 8 He said unto me: Who are you? I answered him: I am an Amalekite. Ch UIEMR LI MI EThA UIEMR (UEMR) ELIU OMLQI ENKI ח ויאמר לי מי אתה ויאמר (ואמר) אליו עמלקי אנכי
9 He said unto me: Stand, I pray you, beside me, and slay me, for the agony has taken hold of me; because my life is just yet in me. T UIEMR ELI OMD NE OLI UMThThNI KI EChZNI AShBTs KI KL OUD NFShI BI ט ויאמר אלי עמד נא עלי ומתתני כי אחזני השבץ כי כל עוד נפשי בי
10 So I stood beside him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen; and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.' 11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him. IE UIChZQ DUD BBGDU UIQROM UGM KL AENShIM EShR EThU יא ויחזק דוד בבגדו ויקרעם וגם כל האנשים אשר אתו
12 They wailed, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of IAUA, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword. {P} IB UISFDU UIBKU UITsMU OD AORB OL ShEUL UOL IAUNThN BNU UOL OM IAUA UOL BITh IShREL KI NFLU BChRB {F} יב ויספדו ויבכו ויצמו עד הערב על שאול ועל יהונתן בנו ועל עם יהוה ועל בית ישראל כי נפלו בחרב {פ}

14 David said unto him: 'How were you not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy IAUA's anointed?' ID UIEMR ELIU DUD EIK LE IRETh LShLCh IDK LShChTh ETh MShICh IAUA יד ויאמר אליו דוד איך לא יראת לשלח ידך לשחת את משיח יהוה
15 David called one of the young men, and said: 'Go near, and fall upon him.' He smote him that he died. TU UIQRE DUD LEChD MANORIM UIEMR GSh FGO BU UIKAU UIMTh טו ויקרא דוד לאחד מהנערים ויאמר גש פגע בו ויכהו וימת
16 David said unto him: 'Your blood be upon your head; for your mouth has testified against you, saying: I have slain IAUA's anointed.' {P} TZ UIEMR ELIU DUD DMIK (DMK) OL REShK KI FIK ONA BK LEMR ENKI MThThI ETh MShICh IAUA {F} טז ויאמר אליו דוד דמיך (דמך) על ראשך כי פיך ענה בך לאמר אנכי מתתי את משיח יהוה {פ}
17 David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son, IZ UIQNN DUD ETh AQINA AZETh OL ShEUL UOL IAUNThN BNU יז ויקנן דוד את הקינה הזאת על שאול ועל יהונתן בנו
18 and said--To teach the sons of Judah the bow. Behold, it is written in the book of Jashar: ICh UIEMR LLMD BNI IAUDA QShTh ANA KThUBA OL SFR AIShR יח ויאמר ללמד בני יהודה קשת הנה כתובה על ספר הישר
19 Your beauty, O Israel, upon your high places is slain! How are the mighty fallen! IT ATsBI IShREL OL BMUThIK ChLL EIK NFLU GBURIM יט הצבי ישראל על במותיך חלל איך נפלו גבורים
20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon; unless the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, unless the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. 21 You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of choice fruits; for there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil. 23 Saul and Jonathan, the lovely and the pleasant in their lives, even in their death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
