Sennacherib Invades Judah
1 After these things, and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to make a breach therein for himself. 2 When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem, B UIRE IChZQIAU KI-BE SNChRIB UFNIU LMLChMA OL-IRUShLM ב וירא יחזקיהו כי-בא סנחריב ופניו למלחמה על-ירושלם
3 he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city; and they helped him. G UIUOTs OM-ShRIU UGBRIU LSThUM ETh-MIMI AOINUTh EShR MChUTs LOIR UIOZRUAU ג ויועץ עם-שריו וגבריו לסתום את-מימי העינות אשר מחוץ לעיר ויעזרוהו
4 So there was gathered much people together, and they stopped all the fountains, and the brook that flowed through the middle of the land, saying: 'Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?' 5 He took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and strengthened Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance. 6 He set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the broad place at the gate of the city, and spoke encouragingly to them, saying: U UIThN ShRI MLChMUTh OL-AOM UIQBTsM ELIU EL-RChUB ShOR AOIR UIDBR OL-LBBM LEMR ו ויתן שרי מלחמות על-העם ויקבצם אליו אל-רחוב שער העיר וידבר על-לבבם לאמר
7 'Be strong and of good courage, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him; for there is a Greater with us than with him: Z ChZQU UEMTsU EL-ThIREU UEL-ThChThU MFNI MLK EShUR UMLFNI KL-AAMUN EShR-OMU KI-OMNU RB MOMU ז חזקו ואמצו אל-תיראו ואל-תחתו מפני מלך אשור ומלפני כל-ההמון אשר-עמו כי-עמנו רב מעמו
8 with him is an arm of flesh; but with us is IAUA our God to help us, and to fight our battles.' The people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah. 9 After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem--now he was before Lachish, and all his power with him--to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying: T EChR ZA ShLCh SNChRIB MLK-EShUR OBDIU IRUShLIMA UAUE OL-LKISh UKL-MMShLThU OMU OL-IChZQIAU MLK IAUDA UOL-KL-IAUDA EShR BIRUShLM LEMR ט אחר זה שלח סנחריב מלך-אשור עבדיו ירושלימה והוא על-לכיש וכל-ממשלתו עמו על-יחזקיהו מלך יהודה ועל-כל-יהודה אשר בירושלם לאמר
10 'Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: Whereon do you trust, that you abide the siege in Jerusalem? I KA EMR SNChRIB MLK EShUR OL-MA EThM BTChIM UIShBIM BMTsUR BIRUShLM י כה אמר סנחריב מלך אשור על-מה אתם בטחים וישבים במצור בירושלם
11 Does not Hezekiah persuade you, to give you over to die by famine and by thirst, saying: IAUA our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria? IE ALE IChZQIAU MSITh EThKM LThTh EThKM LMUTh BROB UBTsME LEMR IAUA ELAINU ITsILNU MKF MLK EShUR יא הלא יחזקיהו מסית אתכם לתת אתכם למות ברעב ובצמא לאמר יהוה אלהינו יצילנו מכף מלך אשור
12 Has not the same Hezekiah taken away His high places and His altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying: You shall worship before one altar, and on it shall you offer? 13 Know you not what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any wise able to deliver their land out of my hand? IG ALE ThDOU MA OShIThI ENI UEBUThI LKL OMI AERTsUTh AIKUL IKLU ELAI GUI AERTsUTh LATsIL ETh-ERTsM MIDI יג הלא תדעו מה עשיתי אני ואבותי לכל עמי הארצות היכול יכלו אלהי גוי הארצות להציל את-ארצם מידי
14 Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand? ID MI BKL-ELAI AGUIM AELA EShR AChRIMU EBUThI EShR IKUL LATsIL ETh-OMU MIDI KI IUKL ELAIKM LATsIL EThKM MIDI יד מי בכל-אלהי הגוים האלה אשר החרימו אבותי אשר יכול להציל את-עמו מידי כי יוכל אלהיכם להציל אתכם מידי
15 Now therefore let not Hezekiah beguile you, nor persuade you after this manner, neither believe you him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers; how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?' 16 His servants spoke yet more against IAUA God, and against His servant Hezekiah. TZ UOUD DBRU OBDIU OL-IAUA AELAIM UOL IChZQIAU OBDU טז ועוד דברו עבדיו על-יהוה האלהים ועל יחזקיהו עבדו
17 He wrote also a letter, to taunt IAUA, the God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying: 'As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver His people out of my hand.' IZ USFRIM KThB LChRF LIAUA ELAI IShREL ULEMR OLIU LEMR KELAI GUII AERTsUTh EShR LE-ATsILU OMM MIDI KN LE-ITsIL ELAI IChZQIAU OMU MIDI יז וספרים כתב לחרף ליהוה אלהי ישראל ולאמר עליו לאמר כאלהי גויי הארצות אשר לא-הצילו עמם מידי כן לא-יציל אלהי יחזקיהו עמו מידי
18 They cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language to the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to terrify them, and to affright them; that they might take the city. ICh UIQREU BQUL-GDUL IAUDITh OL-OM IRUShLM EShR OL-AChUMA LIREM ULBALM LMON ILKDU ETh-AOIR יח ויקראו בקול-גדול יהודית על-עם ירושלם אשר על-החומה ליראם ולבהלם למען ילכדו את-העיר
19 They spoke of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands. IT UIDBRU EL-ELAI IRUShLM KOL ELAI OMI AERTs MOShA IDI AEDM יט וידברו אל-אלהי ירושלם כעל אלהי עמי הארץ מעשה ידי האדם
20 Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried to heaven. K UIThFLL IChZQIAU AMLK UIShOIAU BN-EMUTs ANBIE OL-ZETh UIZOQU AShMIM כ ויתפלל יחזקיהו המלך וישעיהו בן-אמוץ הנביא על-זאת ויזעקו השמים
21 IAUA sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. When he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword. KE UIShLCh IAUA MLEK UIKChD KL-GBUR ChIL UNGID UShR BMChNA MLK EShUR UIShB BBShTh FNIM LERTsU UIBE BITh ELAIU UMITsIEU (UMITsIEI) MOIU ShM AFILAU BChRB כא וישלח יהוה מלאך ויכחד כל-גבור חיל ונגיד ושר במחנה מלך אשור וישב בבשת פנים לארצו ויבא בית אלהיו ומיציאו (ומיציאי) מעיו שם הפילהו בחרב
22 Thus IAUA saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all, and guided them on every side. KB UIUShO IAUA ETh-IChZQIAU UETh IShBI IRUShLM MID SNChRIB MLK-EShUR UMID-KL UINALM MSBIB כב ויושע יהוה את-יחזקיהו ואת ישבי ירושלם מיד סנחריב מלך-אשור ומיד-כל וינהלם מסביב
23 Many brought gifts to IAUA to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from thereforth. KG URBIM MBIEIM MNChA LIAUA LIRUShLM UMGDNUTh LIChZQIAU MLK IAUDA UINShE LOINI KL-AGUIM MEChRI-KN כג ורבים מביאים מנחה ליהוה לירושלם ומגדנות ליחזקיהו מלך יהודה וינשא לעיני כל-הגוים מאחרי-כן
24 In those days Hezekiah was sick even to death; and he prayed to IAUA; and He spoke to him, and gave him a sign. KD BIMIM AAM ChLA IChZQIAU OD-LMUTh UIThFLL EL-IAUA UIEMR LU UMUFTh NThN LU כד בימים ההם חלה יחזקיהו עד-למות ויתפלל אל-יהוה ויאמר לו ומופת נתן לו
25 But Hezekiah rendered not according to the benefit done to him; for his heart was lifted up; therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem. KA ULE-KGML OLIU AShIB IChZQIAU KI GBA LBU UIAI OLIU QTsF UOL-IAUDA UIRUShLM כה ולא-כגמל עליו השיב יחזקיהו כי גבה לבו ויהי עליו קצף ועל-יהודה וירושלם
26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of IAUA came not on them in the days of Hezekiah. KU UIKNO IChZQIAU BGBA LBU AUE UIUShBI IRUShLM ULE-BE OLIAM QTsF IAUA BIMI IChZQIAU כו ויכנע יחזקיהו בגבה לבו הוא ויושבי ירושלם ולא-בא עליהם קצף יהוה בימי יחזקיהו
27 Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour; and he provided him treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of goodly vessels; KZ UIAI LIChZQIAU OShR UKBUD ARBA MED UETsRUTh OShA-LU LKSF ULZAB ULEBN IQRA ULBShMIM ULMGNIM ULKL KLI ChMDA כז ויהי ליחזקיהו עשר וכבוד הרבה מאד ואצרות עשה-לו לכסף ולזהב ולאבן יקרה ולבשמים ולמגנים ולכל כלי חמדה
28 store-houses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and flocks in folds. KCh UMSKNUTh LThBUETh DGN UThIRUSh UITsAR UERUTh LKL-BAMA UBAMA UODRIM LEURTh כח ומסכנות לתבואת דגן ותירוש ויצהר וארות לכל-בהמה ובהמה ועדרים לאורת
29 Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very much substance. KT UORIM OShA LU UMQNA-TsEN UBQR LRB KI NThN-LU ELAIM RKUSh RB MED כט וערים עשה לו ומקנה-צאן ובקר לרב כי נתן-לו אלהים רכוש רב מאד
30 This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the city of David. Hezekiah prospered in all his works. 31 Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that He might know all that was in his heart. 32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 33 Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the sepulchres of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. Manasseh his son reigned in his stead. 17 He wrote also a letter, to taunt IAUA, the God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying: 'As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver His people out of my hand.' 18 They cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language to the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to terrify them, and to affright them; that they might take the city. 19 They spoke of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands.	IT UIDBRU EL-ELAI IRUShLM KOL ELAI OMI AERTs MOShA IDI AEDM	יט וידברו אל-אלהי ירושלם כעל אלהי עמי הארץ מעשה ידי האדם
20 Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried to heaven.	K UIThFLL IChZQIAU AMLK UIShOIAU BN-EMUTs ANBIE OL-ZETh UIZOQU AShMIM	כ ויתפלל יחזקיהו המלך וישעיהו בן-אמוץ הנביא על-זאת ויזעקו השמים
21 IAUA sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. When he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword. 22 Thus IAUA saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all, and guided them on every side. 23 Many brought gifts to IAUA to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from thereforth. 24 In those days Hezekiah was sick even to death; and he prayed to IAUA; and He spoke to him, and gave him a sign.	KD BIMIM AAM ChLA IChZQIAU OD-LMUTh UIThFLL EL-IAUA UIEMR LU UMUFTh NThN LU	כד בימים ההם חלה יחזקיהו עד-למות ויתפלל אל-יהוה ויאמר לו ומופת נתן לו
25 But Hezekiah rendered not according to the benefit done to him; for his heart was lifted up; therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem. 26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of IAUA came not on them in the days of Hezekiah. 27 Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour; and he provided him treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of goodly vessels;	KZ UIAI LIChZQIAU OShR UKBUD ARBA MED UETsRUTh OShA-LU LKSF ULZAB ULEBN IQRA ULBShMIM ULMGNIM ULKL KLI ChMDA	כז ויהי ליחזקיהו עשר וכבוד הרבה מאד ואצרות עשה-לו לכסף ולזהב ולאבן יקרה ולבשמים ולמגנים ולכל כלי חמדה
28 store-houses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and flocks in folds.	KCh UMSKNUTh LThBUETh DGN UThIRUSh UITsAR UERUTh LKL-BAMA UBAMA UODRIM LEURTh	כח ומסכנות לתבואת דגן ותירוש ויצהר וארות לכל-בהמה ובהמה ועדרים לאורת
29 Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very much substance.	KT UORIM OShA LU UMQNA-TsEN UBQR LRB KI NThN-LU ELAIM RKUSh RB MED	כט וערים עשה לו ומקנה-צאן ובקר לרב כי נתן-לו אלהים רכוש רב מאד
30 This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the city of David. Hezekiah prospered in all his works. 31 Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that He might know all that was in his heart. 32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 33 Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the sepulchres of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
