Elkanah and His Wives
1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of the hill-country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives: the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah; and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 3 This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice unto IAUA of hosts in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there priests unto IAUA. 4 It came to pass upon a day, when Elkanah sacrificed, that he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions; D UIAI AIUM UIZBCh ELQNA UNThN LFNNA EShThU ULKL BNIA UBNUThIA MNUTh ד ויהי היום ויזבח אלקנה ונתן לפננה אשתו ולכל בניה ובנותיה מנות
5 but unto Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but IAUA had shut up her womb. A ULChNA IThN MNA EChTh EFIM KI ETh ChNA EAB UIAUA SGR RChMA ה ולחנה יתן מנה אחת אפים כי את חנה אהב ויהוה סגר רחמה
6 Her rival vexed her sore, to make her fret, because IAUA had shut up her womb. U UKOSThA TsRThA GM KOS BOBUR AROMA KI SGR IAUA BOD RChMA ו וכעסתה צרתה גם כעס בעבור הרעמה כי סגר יהוה בעד רחמה
7 As he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of IAUA, so she vexed her; therefore she wept, and would not eat. Z UKN IOShA ShNA BShNA MDI OLThA BBITh IAUA KN ThKOSNA UThBKA ULE ThEKL ז וכן יעשה שנה בשנה מדי עלתה בבית יהוה כן תכעסנה ותבכה ולא תאכל
8 Elkanah her husband said unto her: 'Hannah, why weep you? and why eat you not? and why is your heart grieved? am not I better to you than ten sons?' 9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk--now Eli the priest sat upon his seat by the door-post of the temple of IAUA; T UThQM ChNA EChRI EKLA BShLA UEChRI ShThA UOLI AKAN IShB OL AKSE OL MZUZTh AIKL IAUA ט ותקם חנה אחרי אכלה בשלה ואחרי שתה ועלי הכהן ישב על הכסא על מזוזת היכל יהוה
10 and she was in bitterness of soul--and prayed unto IAUA, and wept sore. I UAIE MRTh NFSh UThThFLL OL IAUA UBKA ThBKA י והיא מרת נפש ותתפלל על יהוה ובכה תבכה
11 She vowed a vow, and said: 'O IAUA of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your handmaid, and remember me, and not forget Your handmaid, but will give unto Your handmaid a man-child, then I will give him unto IAUA all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.' 12 It came to pass, as she prayed long before IAUA, that Eli watched her mouth. IB UAIA KI ARBThA LAThFLL LFNI IAUA UOLI ShMR ETh FIA יב והיה כי הרבתה להתפלל לפני יהוה ועלי שמר את פיה
13 Now Hannah, she spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice could not be heard; therefore, Eli thought she had been drunken. IG UChNA AIE MDBRTh OL LBA RQ ShFThIA NOUTh UQULA LE IShMO UIChShBA OLI LShKRA יג וחנה היא מדברת על לבה רק שפתיה נעות וקולה לא ישמע ויחשבה עלי לשכרה
14 Eli said unto her: 'How long will you be drunken? put away your wine from you.' ID UIEMR ELIA OLI OD MThI ThShThKRIN ASIRI ETh IINK MOLIK יד ויאמר אליה עלי עד מתי תשתכרין הסירי את יינך מעליך
15 Hannah answered and said: 'No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before IAUA. TU UThON ChNA UThEMR LE EDNI EShA QShTh RUCh ENKI UIIN UShKR LE ShThIThI UEShFK ETh NFShI LFNI IAUA טו ותען חנה ותאמר לא אדני אשה קשת רוח אנכי ויין ושכר לא שתיתי ואשפך את נפשי לפני יהוה
16 Count not your handmaid for a wicked woman: for out of the abundance of my complaint and my vexation have I spoken hitherto.' TZ EL ThThN ETh EMThK LFNI BTh BLIOL KI MRB ShIChI UKOSI DBRThI OD ANA טז אל תתן את אמתך לפני בת בליעל כי מרב שיחי וכעסי דברתי עד הנה
17 Then Eli answered and said: 'Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of Him.' IZ UION OLI UIEMR LKI LShLUM UELAI IShREL IThN ETh ShLThK EShR ShELTh MOMU יז ויען עלי ויאמר לכי לשלום ואלהי ישראל יתן את שלתך אשר שאלת מעמו
18 She said: 'Let your servant find favour in your sight.' So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad. ICh UThEMR ThMTsE ShFChThK ChN BOINIK UThLK AEShA LDRKA UThEKL UFNIA LE AIU LA OUD יח ותאמר תמצא שפחתך חן בעיניך ותלך האשה לדרכה ותאכל ופניה לא היו לה עוד
19 They rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before IAUA, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah; and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and IAUA remembered her. 20 It came to pass, when the time was come about, that Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she called his name Samuel: 'because I have asked him of IAUA.' 21 The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto IAUA the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. KE UIOL AEISh ELQNA UKL BIThU LZBCh LIAUA ETh ZBCh AIMIM UETh NDRU כא ויעל האיש אלקנה וכל ביתו לזבח ליהוה את זבח הימים ואת נדרו
22 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband: 'Until the child be weaned, when I will bring him, that he may appear before IAUA, and there abide for ever.' 23 Elkanah her husband said unto her: 'Do what seems you good; tarry until you have weaned him; only IAUA establish His word.' So the woman tarried and gave her son suck, until she weaned him. 24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of IAUA in Shiloh; and the child was young. 25 When the bullock was slain, the child was brought to Eli. KA UIShChTU ETh AFR UIBEU ETh ANOR EL OLI כה וישחטו את הפר ויבאו את הנער אל עלי
26 She said: 'Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman that stood by you here, praying unto IAUA. KU UThEMR BI EDNI ChI NFShK EDNI ENI AEShA ANTsBTh OMKA BZA LAThFLL EL IAUA כו ותאמר בי אדני חי נפשך אדני אני האשה הנצבת עמכה בזה להתפלל אל יהוה
27 For this child I prayed; and IAUA has granted me my petition which I asked of Him; KZ EL ANOR AZA AThFLLThI UIThN IAUA LI ETh ShELThI EShR ShELThI MOMU כז אל הנער הזה התפללתי ויתן יהוה לי את שאלתי אשר שאלתי מעמו
28 therefore I also have lent him to IAUA; as long as he lives he is lent to IAUA.' He worshipped IAUA there. {S} KCh UGM ENKI AShELThAU LIAUA KL AIMIM EShR AIA AUE ShEUL LIAUA UIShThChU ShM LIAUA {S} כח וגם אנכי השאלתהו ליהוה כל הימים אשר היה הוא שאול ליהוה וישתחו שם ליהוה {ס}
